Crafting a Durable Deck Amidst Hillside Challenges

Deck build / rebuild projects can be very rewarding, but they can also be a bit daunting.

We have been working on a deck build that ties into our clients' new pool. The finished deck you can see is built into the side of a very steep hill which posed some fun challenges in foundation design and installation.

The new side yard deck which is currently nearing completion had some scary tie in points on the existing house which needed to be rebuilt prior to attaching the new deck. This blocking that you can see here was directly below a load bearing column which was holding a very large section of existing deck on the third level of the house.

Not only is it a miracle that this did not collapse at some point but there actually used to be a hot tub on the old (now removed) deck.

Needless to say we had to spend quite a bit of time building temporary support walls in order to allow us to rebuild this critical structural corner. Now the everything is safe and the new deck is almost complete.
